Sunny's guide to taking better pictures

As requested by a friend of my, here is a guide to take better pictures of yourself, but I think a lot of the tips can be applied to taking better pictures in general.

Yes, yes, I am a self proclaimed camwhore who take countless pictures of myself when I am bored.

Anyways, when it comes to taking pictures, I do have a few tips and tricks that could do wonders to your photo!! But let's get one thing straight, by wonders, I do not mean you can look like a different person! Just the best you can possibly be.... perhaps, possibly, maybe slightly enhanced.

Anyways... here we go!

TIP 1: Make up! Understand that a picture can only be slightly better than than the original subject. Make yourself look as good as you can be.

If you have terrible skin--> Concealer, foundation and power!
If you have small eyes--> Eye liner, eye lash curler, mascara,

you get my drift?

"There is no ugly women, only lazy women!!"  Try to fix your flaws with makeup, but do not go overboard and look CRAZYYY, whatever you do should look natural, I personally am not a fan of heavy makeup!

TIP 2: Angles

It is crucial to understand your own angles! Most of us are not born symmetrical, which is why we look good from some angles and terrible in others. The best way to find your best angle is by taking photos of yourself from all angles, then look through all the pictures you took to find which one you look best in, and that angle is probably your best angle.

It's a good idea to do the angle test several times until you consistently find that the pictures you take from one particle angle look the best. If you just do it the one time, a bad hair day may affect the result.
( left side )
I think this side is my best angle, I like my left eye better than my right eye (yes, my two eyes are different) and I like my hair on my left side better as well~
 ( right side )
Obviously, my right side is not my preferred side, my face look slightly chubbier~
 ( front)
Front is okay I guess...
If you look through my past pictures, I think most of them are of my left side and front, and occasionally my right side @.@

TIP 3: Understand your features

It's important to know your own features and understand how to best present them!

If your teeth look like the skyline of Manhattan, aka not straight, it's probably not a good idea to show them off... try smiling with no teeth perhaps! it's more lady like <3

OMG, everything is cute on kids!

If you have a round face, try turning to the side when taking pictures!! You get the idea!

TIP 4: Appreciate the importance of lighting

Natural light is always the best! and yellow light bulbs are the worst!! for me at least, it makes me look all orange. White fluorescent light makes you look ghostly~

You should always use front lighting (which mean the major/strongest light source is in front of you).. unless you are going for some special photo effect.

If the light source is behind you, you will be under exposed, aka you will look dark.

If the light is right on top or below you, you will get what I call the ghost story look >.<

It would not be this creepy, but you get the idea.

TIP 5: The right camera

The front facing camera that's on your smartphone is a life saver when it comes to camwhoring. Cause, obviously, you know how the picture will look like. Unfortunately, none of the smartphones available in the market have very high megapixel for their front camera...

The only front facing camera I am aware of is the Samsung TL225, but I am too poor to splurge on cameras.

TIP 6: Take lots of pictures

It's like, if you kissed a whole lot of guys, one of them is bound to be a good kisser! So keep all of the things I mentioned in mind, apply the angle rule, find good lighting and take lots of photos! Not only will you have a lot of selections to choose from, you will also learn to take better photos with lots and lots of practice.

TIP 7: Image editing

Trust me, 95% of the photos that your felt looked really good have been edited! So go ahead and put yourself on the same playing field by editing your photos!!!

One thing I want to say before we go on is that, the changes you make should be subtle!! you want people to look at your picture and say " Wow you look good." and NOT " Wow, you got some hard core photo editing skills." or " Is that you?"

Any how, you probably have heard of people using Photoshop and stuff... but I personally find it too time consuming to load the pictures and Photoshop and save and post... wayyyyy too much work... what I usually use is just a image editing App on my iPhone.

There are a ton of them!! and lots a free!! Some works better than others, but my favourt, favourt one is actually a paid App called "Face Cam" that I had on my old iPhone... but since I got my new phone, I have been using another free App called 美图秀秀 (mei tu xiu xiu) it's a chinese App, apologies to my English only friends. Perhaps you can try the Face Cam app.

I usually just adjust the lighting, and increase contrast if needed. Again, SUBTLE is the KEY!!!

Here is the app I use

Here, I increased skin brightness and even out my skin tone, but there is a ton of other functions to this app.

Here is the before and after:
 Before
After

So you see, there is no major difference, but it looks slightly better~

That's all for now~ I hope you have found my tips helpful ^.^ Good LUCK!
