My boyfriend's birthday is coming up, and I am scrambling to come up with ideas to make it a special day. Admittedly, my boyfriend has always put a bigger effort into my birthdays than I have in his ... It's not my fault really... his birthday always falls during exam time...
His birthday is on December 12th, and since it's a Wednesday, we will be celebrating it on December 8th, the Saturday before the week of his birthday.
Today is December 4th, and I will be updating this entry over the next 4 days as I plan out his birthday.
As a recent graduate, my finances is fairly tight.... good thing my bf is not a big present and fancy restaurant kind of guy. I did have to think insanely hard to come up with low budget, yet special birthday plan! I hope it will give you some ideas for your next creative, low budget birthday for your significant other!
Here is the basic plan I am think of:
A hand made birthday card
A hand made present, still undecided on what to make yet
Personally cook my bf's favourt dishes... but if your kitchen seems to hate you, opt for a friend or family member's help!
Making a cheesecake... (he loves my cheesecake ... but I am not sure if I will have time to make it >.< since I have none of the ingredients I need)
December 6th
So far the plan execution has been disastrous, I have had nothing done, and I would not have time to do it tomorrow because I need to attend a company Christmas party. I will need some real creativity to pull off the card and the gift... I think I will probably give up on the cheese cake because it takes too dame long!
December 7th
Luckily I was able to come up with a quick solution to this mess! So here is what I ended up doing.
Instead of a card which will take me a long time to design, make etc. I decided to write a letter, more like a love letter.. But a straight forward letter would not be good enough... so I decided to challenge myself by writing one with a hidden message, you know... ones where the first word of every sentence spells out a message... it did take me a little time, but fortunately, I am quite good at creative writing!
Yes, yes... As for the present, there is this little bird house that I have been painting for a really long time, it was always meant to be given to my boyfriend, and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to give it to him.
The little window of the bird house is heart shaped, so its like a house of love~

December 8th
The last piece of the puzzle is that I will be extra nice to bf today!
I arrived at my bf's place at around 11am, any earlier he would still be asleep. I gave him the letter and the present first and we headed out to Loblaw's Maple Leaf Garden, a beautiful grocery store, to shop for ingredients. Back in our university days we would always shop for grocery together, so grocery shopping together has a special place in our hearts. It's always good to relive the happy moments from the past!
Bf wanted to eat 亲子丼, a Japanese dish that has chicken and eggs, and home made fried chicken strips. So we picked out the ingredients for it as well as a few other new foods to try out.
On the way home I got bf his favourt hot wings from KFC and Booster Juice~ what's left is a hour of frantic cooking!
So~ despite the rush to get all the planning done, everything worked out! I think the most important aspect of a happy birthday, is not how fancy or expensive it is. There is no need to go bankrupt to show you care. As long as you show genuinely love and concern towards the other person and try a little harder to make it special, than it's better than any fancy dinner!
I would even say that in the materialistic time we live in, hand made present is a item of rarity and high value.
Sunny your bf very lucky to have someone like you , wish more people thought like this these days !
