Best Gamathon NA (North America)

From the producers of Learnathon comes the even more epic Gamathon. This May, you too are able to experience the awesomeness, the thrill, the sanctification and the fun of the Best Gamathon NA!

Lol, the above was my attempt to sound like one of those movie trailers, you really have to read it in a deep manly voice to feel the full epicness of it.

If you follow my vlog on Youtube ( here is the link to my channel https://www.youtube.com/user/sinyia), you will know that my boyfriend is a gamer. While I am no gamer, mostly because I suck at it, he has yet to give up on trying to convert me into one. His latest attempt is hosting his first ever Gamathon for me, which is simply hours of continuous gaming. And not having had participated in a gamathon in the past, I can safely say this is the BEST gamathon I have ever had. In my Vlog [Sunny Vlog] Are You Happy Now  you will see me buying a PS3 controller in preparation for the Gamathon.

Here is how things went down on the day of. Obviously, no good gamathon starts in the morning, it's more of an afternoon, late night kind of thing. So we spent the morning planning our menu for the event, which was simple enough, chips will be our snack, and we will order pizza and pop when dinner time comes, and of course a bottle of vodka. Draco, the boyfriend, actually wanted to get Cheetos, and claimed that Cheetos is the snack of choice for a legit gamathon, but I eventually got my way and we ended up with honey mustard flavoured kettle cooked chips. You guys have to understand, I do not allow myself to eat chips, but I love chips, therefore, I take every opportunity to eat them when I have to eat some form of junk food. Sure, I could have skipped eating chips, and Draco would understand, but I did not want to be a party pooper... (lol, excuses I come up for myself)

We also spend the morning to hunt down some Yu-Gi-Oh cards. Lame? Not really la, a side from it being a awesome childhood game, it is really an attempt to catch up on things I never had as a child. My family was by no means poor, but being new immigrants who had to start life from scratch, we had little money to spare. I had no allowance as a child, and we hardly bought anything outside of necessity. I had my first Starbucks when I was 18, and Draco bought it for me. Sure, I wanted a lot of the things other kids had, but I knew enough to not burden my family, and I knew never to ask for anything. Although I did not know Draco as a child, we shared the same end result of never played Yu-Gi-Oh cards.

So now that we both work and earn a living, a lot of the things we do, I do, is to catch up on the things I never had before, like drinking severely overpriced Starbucks and buying games that are probably not intended for my age group.

We bought the cards at Toys R Us, and the sales staff seriously give us the look of " aren't you a little old for card games...." But we shamelessly spend over $30 on Yu Gi and Kaiba's starter decks.

Our gamathon started at around 2 pm, and as with any truly awesome events, it was not without its dramas. The plan was to play Little Big Planet, but it threw a hissy fit and gave us a major issue that prevented us from playing for hours. We should have anticipated it really, it is a rather old game and we should have known there will be a huge accumulation of updates. It went on to downloading updates for the next few hours....

I am a picky gamer, and I only enjoy certain types of games, Draco was very excited to introduce me to Little Big Planet, hoping I would like it, so our hearts were set on playing that particular game even though we had other choices. We passed the time by playing Yu-Gi-Oh, which was equally exciting. I hogged Kaiba's deck because it was stronger, and Draco generously chose YuGi's deck, the weaker one, because he knows I am a sore loser, and will most likely quit playing forever if I lose.

We were both very in-character, me, the arrogant president of Kaiba Corp, and Draco, the ancient Pharaoh who believes in the power of friendship and heart of the cards. We made plenty of references to the show, and were like two geeks who were way too into the game. Of course, I won  most of the games because of my better deck. I guess believing in the heart of the card really only works in TV shows.

It was not long before we were tempted to order our pizza because one time we ordered a customized pizza that turned out awesome. It has chipotle pulled pork, ground beef and onion as toppings, classic tomato sauce and topped with bruschetta. It is amazing! Even thinking about it now I want to have a slice.

Little Big Planet did eventually finish updating, and the rule is, whoever collect less item than the other person at each level have to take a shot of vodka. Draco suggested the drinking rule with a smirk on his face, probably because he know he is a much better player than I am,  and he is right. After I lost the first two games, and took two shots, I kind of figured that I will likely take every other shot there after, so I called off the drinking rule. Unfortunately, two shots of pure vodka had zero effect on me...

The rest of the night carried out in a calmly fashion, me losing more games of Little Big Planet, and Draco, kicking my ass in Little Big Planet. But that's okay, we also played a few more Yu-Gi-Oh games, and I called him plenty of "noob" equivalent names.

All in all it was really fun, an awesome data night in our own nerdy way.
